F.C. Internazionale Milano endured another desperate season, in which it was nowhere close to winning its first league title since 1989. Argentinian coach Héctor Cúper was once again handed several new players in the pre-season, but to finance those, it had to sell Hernán Crespo to Chelsea, leaving Christian Vieri completely on his own at the front.

The new players mostly proved to be expensive flops, and with Cúper sacked during the autumn, Alberto Zaccheroni only just guided the club to the Champions League for the next season, only to be awarded with the sack following the season. One of the causes was the embarrassing 5-1 defeat at home to Arsenal, that knocked Internazionale out of the 2003-04 tournament.

Lazio coach Roberto Mancini took over following the season, bringing several ex-Lazio players to the club. President Massimo Moratti stepped down from his role, formally handing over the power to Giacinto Facchetti, but staying in an ownership position, thus still bankrolling the club.
